For many, going on a trip requires a lot of planning; but this doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, we here at Nihao Planet recommend letting go of all those details, and going on a trip without a plan. To practice what we preach, we took an autumn road trip around the vast and breathtaking country of Iceland.

One of the best parts of traveling is the element of the unexpected, so why cram every minute of your trip with things to do? You might think that not having a plan opens you up to stressful situations, but that’s part of the magic of traveling; being caught in the unexpected allows you to adapt and learn, and helps you to grow and experience life in its fullest.

Driving around Iceland, we got to take in everything from its grassy plains, to its immeasurable mountains and lakes, and towering, majestic waterfalls, as well as meet new and interesting people we might not have otherwise. From Reykjavík to Skaftafell, and Lake Mývatn to Blue Lagoon, we seized opportunities to interact with and take recommendations from locals—after all, it’s the locals who really know how to get into everything a country has to offer.

Not having a set plan frees you up to explore at your own pace, immerse yourself in another culture, and really absorb the beauty of your surroundings. The spontaneity of our trip permitted us to stop where we wanted, when we wanted—and we couldn’t get enough of it. We’re firm believers that if you plan every aspect, you might miss something truly wonderful, and possibly life-changing.

Overall, diving headfirst into Iceland’s variety—from dramatic views of landscapes, to idyllic countrysides and full cityscapes—freed us from expectation, and opened our eyes. It was proof that traveling plan-free can cut down stress, forward adventure, and promotes a sense of inner peace. So take those unexpected stops, and allow yourself to be inspired.
